Facebook is a kind of social networking website that was first launched by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. Actually, Zuckerberg create a FB (the acronym for Facebook) as a media for Harvard University Students to get to know each other. In time, FB developed. Many students from other university have FB accounts. FB continues to develop and become one of the biggest social networking website’s in the world. It’s like everyone living on the planet has an FB account.
FB is useful. It can help us contact our friends or families that live far away from us. FB can also help us make friends from other countries. In spite of the fact that it is useful, FB certainly has negative effects, especially on students.
All people know that a student’s responsibility is to study. However, because of FB, most of them change their habit. They prefer to sit down in front of computers, open their facebook accounts, and interact with their friends on this social networking website. Why? Because with FB, they don’t need to spend their time thinking. They just “sit and have fun.”
Research by Aryn Karpinski, from Ohio State University, found that students who use Facebook frequently have achieve lower at school than students who don’t use it. Out of 219 students, 148 students are facebook users, and their achievements are lower than students that don’t use it. As Karpinski said, “Although there aren’t direct correlations between facebook and student grades, students that get bad marks like to open their facebook accounts for hours. That means their study times are decreasing, and as result they get bad marks”
In addition, FB is addictive. It’s like drugs. Students addicted to FB act like “they can’t live without it.” If you update your status every hour or less, change your profile frequently, lose sleep over facebook, and spend more than an hour a day on this social networking website, then, you are facebook addict. The students might think, what’s wrong with it? Do you know, this addiction may make student’s mind focused too much on FB and make them hard to concentrate. And the worst, they can’t concentrate on the lesson in the class.
This is a kind of small research by Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent about facebook addict. Cohen found one people (who want to remind anonymous) that have addicted to this social networking website. This people spend 20 hours with FB. She tried to cut down on her Facebook use but failed. Yes, at this point, she is addicted until she doesn’t care about anything because she is too busy with her FB account.
Although FB is a social networking website it can make students lose their friends. Which is a paradox. Friends in here mean “real friend.” Students prefer to sit down in front of computer and socialize via FB. This may lead to them having anti-social behavior. They might withdraw themselves from social interaction with other people.
In conclusion, FB has negative effect on students achievements and their social life. Technology is created by humankind. It is human who should conquer technology, not the other way around.
